Discovering
Indochina:Cambodia, Laos
& Viet Nam
January 17 - February 6, 2008 |
This once-in-a-lifetime journey has been created for discerning travelers
who wish to experience first-hand three ancient cultures still linked today by
the Mekong River. The kind and gentle people of Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam are eager to welcome visitors to their ancient lands.
Travel Designs’ in-depth knowledge of southeast Asia will enable tour participants
to enjoy not only the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in all three countries, such
as the ancient temples at Angkor, historic Luang Prabang, and enchanting Hoi
An ~ and many other remarkable places ~ but also to experience genuine daily
life in villages and in the countryside to a degree not possible on large group
tours or cruises.
Note: The tour will be limited to fewer than 20 persons. Group trans-Pacific
air travel from Los Angeles, in Business Class or Premium Economy Class will
be available to tour participants.
A unique, hands-on journey through beautiful and enchanting Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam that welcome visitors to take pleasure in a glorious past and a stirring
renaissance. An exciting adventure of discovery awaits you! |
Laos will surprise and enchant. Friends of Travel Designs on previous
trips fell in love with this quiet mountainous land along the Mekong River, in particular Luang Prabang, the best preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. We'll also
take time to cruise the still remarkably undeveloped Mekong River, visiting
simple villages and ancient Buddhist caves along the way.
Cambodia will offer us bustling Phnom Penh,
with a stunning royal palace (where, as one traveler said, "There's a beautiful picture, no matter where you turn!"), and of course, the
"Crown Jewel", Angkor.
Angkor was once the capital of the powerful Khmer Empire, whose astonishing patrimony we'll
enjoy during a 4-day visit among Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and
hundreds of other temples and monuments, where Cambodians still carry on
their daily lives of work, family and prayer. |
And Viet Nam, a place like nowhere else you may
have imagined – with miles of unspoiled dramatic coastline, vast upland forests, and fertile lowlands typified by vividly green rice fields dotted with water buffalo and clusters of women in
distinctive conical hats
.

In the north, there's vibrant Hanoi that nicely
combines the ancient with the modern, cyclo
pedicabs with limousines, noodle shops with
nouvelle cuisine, while in the south, brash and
dynamic Ho Chi Minh City (née Saigon) ranges from
sophisticated night life to early morning t'ai-chi to day-long money making.

Then, there's Hué, the heart and soul of the
country and home of the last royal dynasty. Time will also stand still for
us at sleepy Hoi An, once a major maritime
crossroads in Southeast Asia, and at Danang,
facing the South China Sea, where we'll enjoy
mile upon mile of the white sandy beach that American GIs called China
Beach.

Throughout our sojourn, our hotels are deluxe and superior first-class –
indeed, most are refurbished historical landmarks – and we'll enjoy a new
world of flavors that celebrate both international
dishes and the traditional cuisine found in the lands along the Mekong River – light and refreshing, using crisp, fresh
vegetables, subtle seasonings, herbs, and unique flavor combinations. |

Treasures of Sicily
May 13-24, 2008
For thousands of years the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Sicily today
is a treasure trove of astonishing feats of art and architecture created
by wave after wave of past rulers: ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs,
Normans, Angevins and Spanish. Their presence and genius resonates today
in the island’s remarkable artistic patrimony, local customs, regional
cuisine, and the rhythm of daily life. Designed for sophisticated travelers
who wish to discover Sicily “below the surface”, this, our most
acclaimed trip, includes events that would be extremely difficult, if not
impossible, for individual travelers to experience on their own.
Long sunny days and mild evenings enable a
leisurely pace, with time to explore artisans' shops and markets overflowing with colorful
fresh fruits and vegetables, dinners "al fresco", and off-the-beaten-path
excursions to some of Sicily's most evocative places--hidden "secrets"
definitely not included on other tours!

At least two nights or more in recently
refurbished first-class hotels in Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa and Taormina.
And, while the intense heat of summer is yet to come, it's warm enough to swim and
relax by the pool after mornings of dazzling sightseeing with top-notch guides, focussed
on some of Europe's most beautiful Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman (Romanesque) art and
architecture. Top it all with great food, fine wine and a special evening in an
aristocratic Sicilian home, and Ecco! (Voilà!): a perfect vacation! |

NEW! Milano! and Lombardia
May 25 - June 2, 2008
From just one hotel, discover the “capital of Northern Italy” ~ Milano ~ a veritable cornucopia of Italian architecture from the Romans and the Romanesque to the present. Join us on a carefully planned series of off-the-beaten-path and behind-the-scenes tours, on foot, by streetcar and private motor coach, and discover the hidden treasures of the city of St. Ambrose, the Visconti and Sforza dukes, and home for lengthy periods to Bramante, Leonardo da Vinci and Giuseppe Verdi. |
Enjoy delightful excursions to Lakes Maggiore and Orta, nearby charming medieval-Renaissance towns, the celebrated Certosa di Pavia, and the verdant countryside of the little-known Lomellina, including visits to several private properties. For lovers of Italy, this is a travel experience not to be missed! Once again, as in our earlier unusual trips to Puglia and the Marche, Travel Designs is “ahead of the curve”! |
By 1300 the Duchy of Milan, ruled by the Visconti and the first of Italy’s “Princely Courts”, included all of the modern region of Lombardia as well as most of northern and central Italy and led the rest of Europe in technology, housing and public health, enabling the city to survive the devastating mid-14th century plague and to flourish during the Renaissance under their successors, the Sforza, who brought artists like Bramante and Leonardo to their court. The enlightened Austrian Empress Maria Theresia further transformed the “Ambrosian” city in the 18th century and during its period as capital of Napoleon’s Kingdom of Italy, Milan’s cultural institutions were, once again, at the cutting edge.

| |
Today, while Milano is known throughout the world for its opera house and leadership
in sophisticated design, few visitors are aware of the breadth and depth of Milan’s
artistic and architectural heritage. Here is your chance to experience it--from an
insider’s point of view! We’ll take you behind locked doors and show you hidden treasures
that would be difficult for you to discover on your own.
Stay an extra day and visit Lake Como, too!
There will be an optional excursion to Lago di Como on Monday, June 2 (with departure, in this case, on June 3).

The following "Past Favorites" are
also under consideration for 2009 and future seasons: |
| |
Imperial Vienna & Prague
Late September
| |
Vienna and
Prague both have what makes a European city special: A stunning natural
setting along a river, dominated by a great castle; a vivid history;
palaces; an impressive cathedral piercing the skyline; sprawling open
squares; narrow, winding streets; formal gardens; interesting markets
and shops; charming restaurants; and wonderful music too! With only two
hotels, this “double city stay” is designed especially for
individuals who desire a particularly unrushed, in-depth travel experience,
enhanced by special visits and music performances. It also will include
an enjoyable train journey through the beautiful early autumn countryside,
from Vienna to Prague.
Our four-night stay in Vienna, only a few steps from St. Stephan’s Cathedral will enable us to focus on the historic core of the city, proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. Also nearby are many other enduring images of Vienna, including the Secession Building, with its unusual dome of gilded laurel leaves. In addition to these “must-sees” and countless imperial treasures, our sojourn in Vienna will include unrushed walks with our top-notch Austrian guide in search of hidden landmarks linked with Vienna’s long and rich history as a cultural center. |
| Then, after a relaxing train journey through the beautiful early autumn countryside of Lower Austria and Bohemia, Prague ~ the most beautiful city in central Europe ~ will steal our hearts! Old Praha emerged from the war almost unscathed, but “slept” during 40 years of Soviet occupation and now in its entirety comprises a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From our luxurious hotel de charme near the castle, we’ll experience marvelous sightseeing, including a visit to the ravishing, privately-owned Lobkovic Castle in nearby Nelahozeves, the birthplace of Antonín Dvořák. With our five-night stay in “Golden Prague” timed to coincide with the renowned Prague Autumn International Music Festival, Imperial Vienna & Prague is a jewel of a trip and promises to be one for the memory books! |

unexpectedly vibrant, including its excellent wines and fine cuisine.

Hill Towns of Umbria and Tuscany
October
| |
The mystical, green slopes of Umbria and cypress-clad rolling hills of Toscana,
with their enchanting medieval hilltop towns of stone and brick, have come to symbolize
Italy in the minds of many American and northern European travelers. Here, the
Italian language emerged from a sea of dialects, and Renaissance painting and sculpture
flourished and spread quickly to northern Italy and over the Alps. |
| |
From small hotels in Orvieto,
Gubbio, and Siena (with at least two nights at each),
carefully chosen to spend less time in the coach and more in the hill towns themselves,
our unrushed "back roads" journey will take in the "must-sees", like Assisi, Perugia, and San Gimignano, but will focus on many smaller
towns as well, such as Todi, in Umbria and Pienza, in Tuscany--and much more! |
We'll conclude our "movable feast" for the senses, mind and spirit
with four nights in the very center of Florence.
For lovers of Renaissance art, great civic architecture (magnificent cathedrals
too!), breathtaking scenery, and delicious regional cuisine (during the wild mushroom,
game and truffle season!), this immensely satisfying itinerary--specially designed to take
in recently completed art restorations, as well as memorable, difficult-to-find
"jewels--is not to be missed! Let us worry about the complicated logistics
involved while you drink in the superb art, classic vistas and engaging towns. |

The "Other"
Central Italy: The Marche and Romagna
late September/October |
For many northern Italians, central Italy
begins in Romagna. Our unusual itinerary will focus on two
of this region's great art cities: Bologna and Ravenna, a charming town
famous worldwide for magnificent late Roman and Byzantine mosaics-and our hotel could not
be better located among them! |
Bologna's stately medieval
center--where we'll reside during the last part of our journey--is remarkably intact, a
lush palette of infinite shades of red, ochre, terra cotta, mustard and rose, where
gorgeous shops on pedestrian-only streets are nestled check by jowl with old-fashioned
stores, creating a nostalgic yet uncontrived scene from years gone by.

Our unique exploration of the "other
central Italy" will take us truly "off the beaten path" in the Marche.
This little-known region, tucked between more famous Tuscany and Umbria and the
Adriatic Sea, is rich in historic theaters, hidden gardens, and art and architecture from
the Romans to the Renaissance. |
From well-appointed hotels opposite the Ducal Palace in Urbino,
home of one of Italy's great Renaissance courts, and in fascinating Ancona,
overlooking the sea, we'll also take in Pesaro, Ascoli Piceno, Loreto
and the dramatic Conero coastline. |

"The Marches", with its gracious
countryside, genuine cuisine, and small, engaging medieval towns that have an unexplored
feel about them, is a region just waiting to enchant discriminating travelers!
| |
Rome: The "Eternal City"
October |
| Rome is a veritable feast for the eye!
Fountains, sculpture, obelisks, elegant palazzi, gardens, and
ancient ruins ~ many of them hidden ~ are waiting to be discovered around every corner… |
Note: Limited to 16 participants, this 9-day tour will begin in Rome on
Saturday afternoon, October 13, and will conclude in Rome on Sunday morning,
October 21. It has been scheduled so that individuals who wish to participate
also in our Romantic Northern Italy tour will be able to do so. |
| Indeed, there is much to explore beneath the surfaceof Italy’s premier city – all from the convenience ofjust one hotel superbly located near Piazza Navona and scores of inviting restaurants, trattorie, and cafés. A carefully planned program of unusual walking tours and visits will peel back layer after layer of Ancient Rome in all its tumbled glory |

We'll marvel at treasures brought
back from exotic outposts of the Empire and displayed in public squares
that rival opera sets, discover hidden masterpieces, and wonder at
the architectural splendor of this great Renaissance and Baroque city. With
many restorations just completed in the last few years, Rome is more
gorgeous than ever. |

Our sojourn in the “Eternal City” promises to delight and enrich the lives of both first-time visitors and those who already have fallen in love with Lord Byron’s “city of the soul”. |
There will be ample free time as well
to pursue individual interests, take in special exhibitions or museums,
explore local markets, wander serendipitously through medieval streets
interrupted by ancient columns, parts of arches, or pieces of antique
sculpture, join the afternoon passeggiata, or just relax,
soak up the atmosphere and "people watch" from a neighborhood
café in
an engaging piazza.

| |
The Amalfi Coast and
Naples
May |
A paradise...at its most stunning in late spring ~
with friendly harbors, inviting climate, and fertile plains and hills.
One easily can imagine how excited Greek explorers were when they came upon
this land nearly three millennia ago and how eagerly the Romans took over in
the 4th and 3rd centuries BC what they would call Campania felix ("Happy Campania")

It's no wonder that countless
modern travelers would come to see it and be conquered by the peaceful,
smiling Italy they found, and still find, along the Amalfi Coast with its
craggy cliffs above the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the
colorful islands ~ Capri, Ischia and Procida ~ and Naples by its astonishing
bay within sight of fabled Mt. Vesuvius.

One of Europe's most dramatic settings and an unexpected
wealth of artistic treasures make Naples a perfect choice for a stimulating
and memorable opening of our tour of Italy's "most beautiful estate".
| |
Highlights of our sojourn in Bella Napoli will include the marvelous Farnese sculpture collection in
the renowned National Archeological Museum, along with mosaics from Pompeii,
superb paintings in the former royal palace of Capodimonte, the world-famous
Teatro San Carlo, visits to nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum, and fascinating strolls to
experience the life of the old city in its narrow streets and to enjoy
breathtaking views of the finest harbor in Italy.

Relaxing excursions will take in nearby Procida
in the azure blue Golfo di Napoli (where Il Postino ["The
Postman"] was filmed), the royal gardens at Caserta and Vecchia Caserta,
the picturesque medieval hilltown above, and the magnificent Greek Doric
temples at Paestum.

And not to be missed is the Costiera Amalfitana with its warm and fragrant air, churches and
cloisters that have something of the exotic feel of "Araby" about them, and
a special quality of strangeness in the palazzi and gardens of
Ravello.

From here, we'll take a boat for a day-long excursion to Capri, and we'll
enjoy the very special atmosphere of charming ~ and rather elite ~ Positano,
where our residence will be in the heart of town in a delightful hotel that
does not usually accept groups. If a visit to the Amalfi Coast and the
vibrant city of Naples ~ de rigueur on the aristocratic European
"Grand Tour" ~ has always been your dream, then this special journey is not to be missed! |

Liguria: The Italian Riviera
May |
| |
Liguria encompasses the full sweep of Italy's
northwestern coast from La Spezia (near Tuscany's Carrara)
through the Riviera to France. Its rocky, terraced and often
precipitous shore is punctuated by a succession of pastel-colored fishing
villages, including the five tiny, isolated ports of the Cinque Terre and world-famous Portofino, where weathered trawlers vie for space
with the yachts of millionaires. Behind it all is the mountainous
interior with perched villages, leafy vales, and nature reserves-a land of
vines, olive trees, and wild herbs that is rarely seen by foreign visitors. comfort and

Dividing the Ligurian Riviera is mighty Genova (Genoa), home of Christopher Columbus, Andrea Doria, and Paganini, and for
more than 500 years a prosperous maritime republic contending on equal terms
with Venice. Famous for centuries for banking and trade, Genova today is Italy's most important commercial port and its historic center is
one of Europe's "hidden jewels". Genova is loaded with
magnificent places, elaborately decorated with tromp-l'oeil, and is
famous among Italians for its love of comfort and good food. |

Vineyards turning red, bleached limestone cliffs and
gnarled olive trees provide an unforgettable autumn

time-worn villages like Séguret and Gigondas,
and the tranquil lanes and tiny squares of those
"little places in the country" revealed in recent
years by many writers. |
From our first-class hotels in
Villeneuve-les-Avignon and Aix-en-Provence,
we'll venture forth to savor the glories of
Provence's Romanesque architecture at Sénanque,
the vast Palais des Papes in Avignon, Van Gogh's haven
in St-Rémy, Cézanne's Mont St-Victoire,
the delightful towns of the Vaucluse and the Luberon,

…and, along the regally blue Mediterranean shore,
the harbors, coves, sandy beaches and pastel-colored
villages around Cap Canaille. There will be time to
savor the atmosphere of Provence … markets with
bright arrays of autumn fruit and vegetables …
wine that's too good to export … renowned Provençal
cuisine … and, perhaps, you'll even want to pause on
a café terrace in the pleasant autumn air to
watch a game of pétanque!

In Jefferson's
Footsteps: A Journey through the Heart of France
October
This unique itinerary traces Thomas Jefferson's historic 1787 journey through some of
the loveliest countryside in France. Traveling south through Burgundy and
the Rhône Valley to Western Provence, Jefferson's enthusiasm for fine
wines, rich farmland, and Roman ruins is palpable all along the way. From
distinguished hotels in Beaune, Vienne and Avignon--with
two-five nights at each--savor also masterpieces of Renaissance art, medieval towns,
colorful markets, fine cuisine and visit the only château in which Jefferson
stayed--still privately owned and not open to the public!

Our visits will include Sens, Auxerre, Autun,
Dijon, Tournus, St-Romain-en-Gaul, Orange, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
and Senaque--place names which bring to mind the best of French Romanesque
architecture and a non-stop parade of hilltop castles, quaint towns, châteaux, vineyards,
and, of course, fabulous wine, cheese, mustard, and a host of other delectables. All
"capped" by an elegant finale in Paris, in the heart of our third
President's neighborhood (after a relaxing high-speed train ride from Avignon)
